Anyang can qualify, but Jets look unstoppable

January 10, 2024 – Funabashi Arena, Chiba, Japan

Storylines:

1.      Qualified Jets aim for perfect season

The Chiba Jets have qualified for the Final Four. If they continue their perfect run this Wednesday, then they will likely avoid facing Jeremy Lin’s New Taipei Kings in the semifinals.

Last month, Chiba Jets became the first team to qualify for the first-ever EASL Final Four. The B.LEAGUE side are undefeated this season with a 5-0 record.

Having topped Group A, they will play the second-placed team in Group Bin the semifinals. This looks likely to mean they avoid a heavyweight semifinals clash against Jeremy Lin’s New Taipei Kings, who are currently dominating Group B.

The standings in Group B are more fluid, but it looks likely that the second-placed team will either be Jets’ B.LEAGUE rivals Ryukyu Golden Kings or the KBL’s Seoul SK Knights.

A game against Ryukyu would give the Jets a chance to avenge their defeat to the Okinawa side in last year’s B.LEAGUE Finals.

The Jets’ standout performers this EASL season have been Japan national team captain Yuki Togashi and power forward John Mooney. Their top scorer and rebounder is Mooney on 24.3 points and 17.7 rebounds per game.

The last time these two teams met, in a 69-102 Chiba Jets win on December 13, Mooney recorded a 22-point, 22-rebound double-double.

Will the Jets keep their foot on the gas to close out the Group Stage with a perfect, 6-0 record?

2.      Jung Kwan Jang can qualify with a win

Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters are not looking in great shape as they make a stand to qualify for the Final Four.

It’s become clear that Jung Kwan Jang are not the dominant force they were last season, when they won both EASL Champions Week and the Korean Basketball League Finals.

The KBL champs could qualify for the EASL Final Four with a win over Chiba. However, current form suggests this is unlikely.

Jung Kwan Jang lost heavily to Chiba, 69-102, at home in the teams’ first EASL encounter this season, on December 13. In 20 games since November 24, the team have won just three games in EASL and KBL combined. During that stretch, they have been outscored by 246 points (1,835-1,589).

Jung Kwan Jang currently hold an 11-20 record n the KBL and are on the outside looking in at the playoff picture.

In EASL, they sit second in Group A with a 2-1 record.

With domestic success looking unlikely this season, EASL remains an opportunity for Jung Kwan Jang to recover some of last season’s glory. But they will have to up their game.

3.      Jung Kwan Jang lose Abando

High-flying Jung Kwan Jang import Rhenz Abando is out indefinitely after a controversial collision with Goyang Sono Skygunners’ import Chinanu Onuaku in a KBL game on December 28.

Filipino star Abando fell hard attempting a put-back dunk and suffered a concussion, a sprained wrist and fractures on his third and fourth lumbar vertebrae.

Abando and Jung Kwan Jang were upset with Onuaku’s challenge that led to the fall.

“Abando is both a player of our team and the national team of the Philippines. You have to protect the player. It doesn’t make sense to hurt your spine just by rebounding,” a Jung Kwan Jang official told the media. “I’m so upset that it became a general hospital. If you take a break for four weeks, you won't be able to run the All-Star Game Dunk Contest, and you won't be able to play the EASL (East Asian Super League).”

The defending KBL slam dunk champion’s fitness will be re-evaluated in a month.

Abando played in all three of Jung Kwan Jang’s EASL games this season and was the team’s second-leading scorer, averaging 15.7 points.
