Suwon KT Closes Out Regular Season With 94-81 Victory Over San Miguel, Beermen Drop To 0-6

Gameday 17: Group A — Suwon KT Sonicboom 94 (3-3) vs. San Miguel Beermen 81 (0-6)

The Suwon KT Sonicboom ended a two-game losing streak on Wednesday with a dominant 94-81 victory over the San Miguel Beermen in the final Group A game of the 2024-25 East Asia Super League regular season. KT seized control early, racing to a 39-15 lead after the first quarter and never allowing San Miguel to cut the deficit to single digits.

For the Beermen, the loss extends their skid to six games, closing out their inaugural EASL season with an 0-6 record. KT, meanwhile, wrapped up the regular season at 3-3 and currently sits in the upper half of the Korean Basketball League standings, positioning themselves for another strong campaign as they aim to qualify for the 2025-26 EASL season.

Post-Game Triple

KT’s Scalding Start

Suwon KT's Ismael Romero (No. 28) attempts a right-handed layup as San Miguel's Moala Tautuaa attempts to defend. Romero finished with 15 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists in 32 minutes of play.

Suwon KT wasted no time. A key factor in its runaway victory was the Sonicboom’s red-hot start, as they stormed to a 39-15 lead by the end of the first quarter. KT was flawless from inside the arc, going 8-for-8 from 2, while also hitting 50% of their threes. Its 24-point lead was the second-largest first-quarter margin of the 2024-25 season, trailing only the Taoyuan Pauian Pilots’ 32-7 advantage over Hong Kong Eastern on Feb. 5.

Defensively, the early deficit was alarming but not unfamiliar for San Miguel. Across six regular season games, the Beermen became the only team to surrender three first quarters of 30-plus points, meaning half their matchups saw them collapse early on the defensive end.

On offense, KT’s explosive opening quarter was uncharacteristic. Before this game, the Sonicboom’s highest-scoring first quarter was just 26 points. They had also recorded the league’s lowest single-quarter output — scoring just seven points twice. Therefore, closing out their EASL campaign with a 39-point first quarter must’ve been a welcome surprise.

Living By The 3

Suwon KT's Moon Seong Gon tries a 3-point shot as San Miguel's Celedonio Trollano puts a hand up to close out. Moon registered six points on two made-3's as part of a night where KT totaled 48 attempts from behind the arc.

Throughout the 2024-25 EASL campaign, Suwon KT has been a consistent high-volume 3-point shooting team, regardless of the opponent. That trend continued Wednesday against San Miguel, as the Sonicboom fired up 48 attempts from beyond the arc — the second-most in a single game this season. The only game with more was KT’s own record-setting 50 three-point attempts in a blowout loss to the Taoyuan Pauian Pilots on Dec. 11.

Despite the sheer volume of shots from deep against the Beermen, KT managed to stay relatively efficient. Its 37.5% shooting from three in this game raised the team’s season average to 27.4% on 219 total attempts, the highest total amount of attempts of any team in the regular season. The Sonicboom also led the league in three-pointers attempted per game, finishing the season with an average of 36.5.

Making History… For The Wrong Reasons

San Miguel center Moala Tautuaa (right) sees his shot erased by a Suwon KT defender on Wednesday. In the absence of regular starter and SMB star June Mar Fajardo, Tautuaa had just two points on sub-20% shooting from the floor.

San Miguel’s latest defeat dropped them to 0-6, making them the first team to endure a winless regular season in the EASL’s home-and-away era. In last year’s inaugural campaign, three teams finished with 1-5 records, but no team had ever gone 0-6 until now.

It has been a rough journey for the Beermen. They showed promise in their season opener, narrowly falling 87-81 to KT in their first matchup. However, things quickly unraveled. A midseason coaching change, along with significant roster turnover — including four different imports suiting up before the team ultimately played without any in Wednesday’s loss — left them without stability. San Miguel closed out the season with an average point differential of -14.2.

EASL Player Of The Game: Han Hui Won — Suwon KT Sonicboom

Han Hui Won (left) chats with EASL interviewer Alex Oh during a postgame segment. Han earned Player of the Game honors after scoring 15 points on 41.7% shooting from three, hitting five of his 12 attempts from beyond the arc.

Han Hui Won delivered arguably his best performance of the 2024-25 EASL season, finishing with 15 points on 41.7% shooting. The Suwon KT sharpshooter drained five 3-pointers on 12 attempts. Interestingly, all of his shots came from beyond the arc. For the season, he has attempted just 10 two-pointers — two fewer than the number of 3’s he put up in a single night against San Miguel.

Facing a relatively passive San Miguel defense that frequently left KT’s guards open on the perimeter, Han capitalized on numerous catch-and-shoot opportunities without hesitation.

A consistent threat from deep for Suwon KT all season, Wednesday’s game saw Han take his highest number of 3-point attempts. His 12 attempts rank among the top five in a single game this season, trailing only Heo Ung (Busan KCC Egis), Lu Chun-Hsiang (New Taipei Kings), and Jeantal Cylla (Macau Black Bears). Beyond his shooting, Han also contributed four rebounds and two assists.

Stat Of The Game: 15

Although both teams had been eliminated from postseason contention a month earlier, Wednesday’s matchup was a fast-paced, well-executed game with plenty of shot-making and offensive flow. A key factor in the game’s smooth play was the strong ball control on both ends, as the two teams combined for just 15 turnovers — tied for the fewest in a game this season.

San Miguel committed only eight turnovers, while Suwon KT’s seven matched the second-lowest total by a team all season, resulting in minimal stoppages. In contrast, the following and final game of the 2024-25 EASL season on Gameday 17 between the New Taipei Kings and Meralco Bolts was far more chaotic, with those teams combining for 35 turnovers.
