Storylines

Ending On A High Note

Suwon KT's Heo Hoon (left) drives on San Miguel's Krismoir Rosales during their game at EASL Tip-Off 2024 on Oct. 2. Heo finished with 17 points and a game-high nine assists in a 87-81 KT win.

Wednesday’s game marks the final outing of the 2024-25 EASL season for both Suwon KT and San Miguel, who will finish at the bottom of Group A. While neither team is postseason-bound, both have a chance to close their campaigns on a high note.

Suwon KT’s debut EASL season has been a rollercoaster. They opened with an 87-81 win over San Miguel on Oct. 2 but suffered a heavy defeat to Final Four-bound Taoyuan Pauian Pilots. An 80-78 midseason upset against group leader Hiroshima Dragonflies briefly reignited hope, but a costly road loss to Hong Kong Eastern on Jan. 7 ended its playoff aspirations.

San Miguel endured a turbulent 0-5 season, marked by frequent import changes and a coaching switch after three games. Their struggles extended to the PBA’s Commissioner’s Cup, where they missed the conference playoffs for the first time in a decade. A win on Wednesday would help salvage some pride and prevent them from becoming the only team to finish 0-6 in EASL’s home-and-away format.

The JD Show

JD Cagulangan poses with his teammates after earning game MVP honors in a recent KBL outing. Cagulangan recently signed with Suwon KT in Dec. 2024 after leading the University of the Philippines to its second UAAP title in three years.

Suwon KT guard JD Cagulangan will be a key player against Philippine powerhouse San Miguel. Facing a top team from his home country, the young prospect will be eager to make an impression.

A recent University of the Philippines (UP) graduate, Cagulangan led his team to its second UAAP title in three years in 2024, earning Finals MVP honors with averages of 13.7 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in the championship series. Since joining Suwon KT on Dec. 17, he has posted 7.5 points and nearly 1.8 rebounds per game in 11 appearances.

Adding to his motivation entering Wednesday’s contest is his omission from Gilas Pilipinas’ training camp and exhibition games ahead of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers (Feb. 20-25). With national team preparations underway, Cagulangan will look to prove himself against one of the Philippines’ most storied franchises.

Undermanned San Miguel

San Miguel guard Juami Tiongson (left) controls possession against Hong Kong Eastern's Hayden Blankley on Jan. 15. With CJ Perez and June Mar Fajardo sidelined for FIBA Asia Cup Qualifier preparations, Tiongson and other SMB players will need to step up.

Starting Feb. 13, the Philippine national team will head to Doha, Qatar, for training camp and exhibition games ahead of its FIBA Qualifiers against Chinese Taipei and New Zealand. Leading the roster are San Miguel stars June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez, who will miss the EASL game against Suwon KT due to the tight schedule — a major blow for SMB.

Fajardo — San Miguel’s 6-foot-10 center and former 8-time PBA MVP —  has been the team’s standout performer this season, averaging 15.4 points and 9.8 rebounds while shooting nearly 80% from the field. Perez, though less dominant, has been a steady presence, starting every game and contributing 6.2 points per contest.

Without them, San Miguel faces an uphill battle to secure its first EASL win but will turn to Juami Tiongson and Celedonio Trollano, both of whom have impressed. Trollano, in particular, shined with a 20-point outing against Hong Kong Eastern on Jan. 15. Additionally, backup center Moala Tautuaa will need to step up in Fajardo’s absence.
