Reigning KBL regular season champions down KT 77-67 to win KBL Cup
Wonju DB Promy defeated East Asia Super League (EASL) team, the Suwon KT Sonicboom, on Sunday to win the 2024 Korean Basketball League Cup. This marks DB’s first-ever KBL Cup victory since the competition began in 2020.
Scraping its way into the semifinals after beating the Seoul SK Knights on point differential, DB bested the Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus, 81-75, before taking down KT, 77-67, in the final. DB import Chinanu Onuaku earned tournament MVP honors after tallying 24 points, 17 rebounds and five assists.
KT’s road to the championship game started by topping Group B with two wins in two contests. Most notably, the Sonicboom clinched an 84-74 win over reigning KBL champions — and 2024-25 EASL rivals — the Busan KCC Egis. From there, KT triumphed over the Daegu KOGAS Pegasus but ultimately fell to DB.
Looking ahead, KT begins its 2024-25 KBL campaign on Oct. 19 against KCC. The Sonicboom match up with the Seoul Samsung Thunders before hosting the P. LEAGUE+’s Taoyuan Pauian Pilots on Oct. 23, with hopes of improving to 2-0 in EASL play.
KCC doesn’t play its first EASL game until Nov. 6 when it travels to take on the Macau Black Bears at Macau SAR’s Studio City Event Center.
