After the birth of the BAL, the Basketball Africa League, a partnership between FIBA and NBA, which held its inaugural season this year, a second league, this time in eastern Asia, supported again by FIBA, is born: the EASL, the East Asia Super League.

In August 2020, FIBA, the sports world’s governing body, granted exclusive recognition and support through a 10-year formal agreement for EASL to launch and operate a new regional championship for professional clubs in Asia. Prior to this agreement, EASL had held four successful preseason tournaments from 2017-2019, featuring elite club teams from the top leagues in Asia, including: Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), B. LEAGUE of Japan, Korean Basketball League (KBL), Philippines Basketball League (PBL), and Super Basketball League (SBL) of Taiwan.

Behind the idea of these preseason tournaments and of the new league there is Matt Beyer, the EASL CEO and co-founder.
